PALMVIEW, Texas-The Palmview City Council this week proclaimed September 25-29, 2023, as National GEAR UP Week. GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.
The goal of the program is to prepare and show students that a college education is attainable regardless of where you come from and how much money one has.
GEAR UP is a federally funded program overseen locally by the Region One Education Service Center. The program follows students from middle school to high school offering guidance throughout to ensure they are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
Our very own Councilmember Alexandra Flores is a GEAR UP Counselor at Palmview High School and her student Itzel Flores who was present for the special proclamation says she’s thankful for the opportunity. “ I want to thank Region One for giving us this opportunity and I want to thank Mrs. Flores and Mrs. Portillo our counselors for always being there for us. I know they will help me out with any questions I have about high school, extracurricular activities, and college.” She added that this has been the best experience ever!
