Council Member JL Perez

PALMVIEW, Texas- Jose Luis Perez,  Palmview Council Member for Place 2, resigned from the City Council today effective June 30. This after his employer, La Joya Independent School District adopted a policy prohibiting employees in positions equal or above an assistant principal to hold an elected position.

Perez was first elected to the City Council in 2018 and was reelected in May 2022. He is currently serving year three of a four-year term. He previously served as Mayor Pro Tem from November 2020 through June 2022.

While on the Council he achieved the Certified Municipal Official certification.  The program offered by the Texas Municipal League and the Texas Association of Mayors, Councilmembers, and Commissioners offers a variety of educational opportunities for professional development in municipal leadership that enhance the official’s policymaking and leadership skills.

The Palmview City Council accepted Perez’s resignation letter during a special meeting on Wednesday, June 12. In the letter, Perez thanked the citizens for allowing him to help the community. “Serving on the Commission has been a profound honor and a privilege. I am incredibly grateful to the citizens of Palmview for entrusting me with the responsibility of representing their interests. Over the past six years, I have deeply valued the opportunity to collaborate with my fellow commissioners, city staff, and the community at large in working toward a better future for our city.”

Perez goes on to say that he is incredibly proud of the work the council has accomplished together from improving much-needed infrastructure to bringing trash service to the city. “We have made significant strides in improving our city and economic development. I am confident the city will continue on this positive trajectory.”

The Palmview City Council thanked him for his service stating he will be missed.  Meantime, the City Charter requires that an election be held to fill a vacant position regardless of the time left on the term.

The Council approved a special election to be held on July 30 with the filing period for candidates starting today, June 12 through June 20, 2024, at 5 p.m.
