PALMVIEW, Texas- The Palmview Fire Department and the American Red Cross have joined forces to provide homeowners in the community with free smoke alarms. The effort is part of the national Red Cross Sound the Alarm Campaign.
Statistics show that smoke alarms save lives when properly installed and maintained. Fire Chief Jerry Alaniz says nationwide three out of five deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “ Fire spreads fast so having a working smoke alarm gives you early warning so you can get outside quickly. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half when you have a working smoke alarm.”
The long-term goal of this partnership is to provide and install a smoke alarm in as many homes as possible in Palmview.
Palmview Fire Department personnel and Red Cross volunteers will begin this life-saving effort on December 2 and it will be done in two phases. The first phase involves going house by house to register homeowners who want to get the free alarm. The smoke alarms will then be installed on December 9.
This first effort will focus on the southwest part of the city with three streets- Mata, Ramona, and Estrella. More streets will be added as volunteers become available.
The American Red Cross provides the smoke alarms free of charge as long as the city provides the volunteers.
Chief Alaniz says he’s proud of his staff for volunteering their time and reiterates the importance of having working smoke alarms, especially during the holiday season when many homeowners use lights to decorate their homes.
Homeowners on Mata, Ramona, and Estrella can expect to see the Fire Department and Red Cross Volunteers beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2.
