PALMVIEW, Texas —As the holiday season approaches, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is launching a vital public safety initiative titled “Drive Sober, No Regrets.” This campaign aims to remind motorists of the life-threatening dangers associated with drunk driving. Palmview Police hopes to save lives by joining other law enforcement agencies across Texas and will be increasing enforcement efforts that will be in effect from December 12 through January 1. This aligns with the national heightened enforcement period sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Drunk driving remains a critical issue, devastating thousands of families throughout Texas each year. Unfortunately, the problem intensifies during the holiday season. Statewide statistics reveal that one in four traffic fatalities result from drunk drivers, a figure that disturbingly increases to 28% during the holidays.

Jose Trevino, Chief of Police, emphasized, “It’s not okay to drink and drive. And it’s not okay for friends and families to lose a loved one because someone chose to drive while impaired. There is always a safe and sober way home—make that choice every time you drink.”

The consequences of drunk driving crashes are both real and heartbreaking. During the Thanksgiving and holiday season last year, there were 126 fatalities and 272 serious injuries in crashes involving impaired drivers. What should be a time of joy and celebration turned into a period of mourning and loss for many families.

The message is clear: drunk driving crashes are 100% preventable. If you consume any alcohol, do not drive. Instead, consider the following safe and responsible alternatives:

  • Designate a sober driver before you start drinking.
  • Use a rideshare service or taxi to get home safely.
  • Call a sober friend or family member for a ride.
  • Take advantage of public transportation
  • Stay where you are until you have sobered up.

By planning ahead and making smart choices, we can all contribute to safer roads this holiday season. Let’s ensure the holidays remain a time of happiness, not heartbreak, by committing to drive sober.

Drive Sober. No Regrets. is a key component of #DriveLikeATexan, a statewide social media and word-of-mouth initiative encouraging safer driving decisions to help end the streak of daily roadway deaths. November 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways.
